After years of hard work, writer/editor Marc Sumerak has made
his lifelong dream of working in the comic book industry a reality!
Sumerak began his writing career over a decade ago with the
on-line writing endeavor, Abandoned
Warehouse Press. Alongside high school friend Jerry Negrelli,
Sumerak wrote and edited dozens of titles for AWP
and co-created hundreds of off-beat characters.
While earning his BFA in Creative Writing at Bowling Green State
University, Sumerak had the life-changing opportunity to move
to NYC and spend a semester working as a Marvel Comics editorial
intern. The experience provided Sumerak with the knowledge and
contacts necessary to prepare him for the long road ahead...
After completing his internship, Sumerak was asked to write
the AVENGERS
CASEBOOK 1999 -- an informative look at previous issues
of Marvel's AVENGERS series. Not long after, Sumerak
got the call from Marvel offering him a coveted position on
the editorial staff!
One week after graduating from college, Sumerak moved back to
NYC to join the Marvel editorial team. During his time on staff
(close to four years), he worked as Assistant Editor to Senior
Editor Tom Brevoort on over 500 comic book publications -- including
runs on AVENGERS, FANTASTIC FOUR, THOR, IRON MAN and
many more!
Sumerak also edited a number of his own titles during his time
on staff, including AGENT X, INHUMANS and the critically-acclaimed
SENTINEL
-- a book whose original concept was proposed and developed
by Sumerak.
After leaving Marvel's editorial staff at the end of 2003, Sumerak
returned to his hometown of Cleveland, and began to pursue freelance
writing work... and it wasn't long before he was once again
working with Marvel Comics, this time as a writer! Sumerak was
contacted to pitch a sci-fi series that he had been developing
while still on staff at Marvel. The pitch developed into Sumerak's
first limited series, GUARDIANS.
Many projects have followed, including a run on MARVEL
AGE: FANTASTIC FOUR and ORORO:
BEFORE THE STORM. Sumerak has also written issues of
MARVEL
ADVENTURES: FANTASTIC FOUR and SPIDER-MAN
UNLIMITED and has even been fortunate enough to create
brand new characters and series for Marvel in both GUARDIANS
and MACHINE
TEEN!
Sumerak is well-known for his writing work on Marvel Comics'
POWER PACK
and the Eisner & Harvey Award nominated FRANKLIN
RICHARDS: SON OF A GENIUS. He has also recently written
multiple-issue story arcs for both MARVEL
ADVENTURES: AVENGERS and MARVEL
ADVENTURES: SPIDER-MAN. Other recent projects include
WEAPON X: FIRST CLASS
and one of 2008's WHAT
IF? one-shots.
In 2009, Sumerak will be returning for another run on MARVEL
ADVENTURES: SPIDER-MAN, as well as writing short stories
starring Spider-Man and the Hulk that will be featured in upcoming
anthologies and specials.
Other clients that Sumerak has worked with include DC Comics,
American Greetings, the Elks, SAMHSA, PBS Kids, Pepperidge Farm,
Tyson Foods, Restaurant Business Magazine, Triple-A Baseball,
SEGA, and more!
Sumerak currently resides in Cleveland, OH.
